Although spring is only a few weeks away, it doesn't yet feel that way, and if you're looking for ways to make your home feel cosier, we can help with some simple furniture swaps that will transform your home into a comfortable haven.

1. Swap fleece rugs for chunky knits.

With temperatures plummeting, thin fleece rugs won't deliver the warmth and tactile comfort of chunky knits so quickly whiz about your home, boxing up fleece rugs for early summer and autumn and laying out replacement rugs on beds and chairs, ready to snuggle up with a book or your favourite TV programme.

If you don't already have a ready supply of chunky knit rugs, now is the time to get some. They are available in a wide range of colours and styles to suit all homes and budgets.

2. Add cushions to your sofas and chairs.

Nothing makes a home feel cosier than snuggly, plump cushions, covered in soft and welcoming fabrics. If your current cushions are starting to feel flat, lumpy it is time to replace them. If they are still in perfectly good order but no longer feel right for you, you can simply replace their covers.

Consider choosing cushions in deep hues such as burnt orange and earthy olive to incorporate this season's trending colours without breaking the bank.

3. Update your lighting.

If you're likely to be shutting the curtains to keep the gloom out, you'll need to make sure your space is well lit to maintain a welcoming ambience. The ceiling lights that cast enough bright light in summer may fall short during these final dark, winter months, so consider adding desk lamps or floor standing lamps with warm white bulbs to brighten your space and keep it feeling light and fresh.

As your sense of sight and smell go hand in hand in determining how a space feels, consider investing in a plug-in wax warmer which will deliver a pleasing glow of warm light while also emanating a fresh, welcoming scent.

4. Transform your bedroom.

Your bedroom is your private cocoon and it needs to feel warm, safe and comforting, so if your mattress is preventing you from getting a good night's sleep or your headboard doesn't provide enough support when you're reading in bed, it's time to make a change.

Mattresses should be changed every 8 years and while you're at it, why not invest in some new bedding too? It is a quick and easy way to refresh your space and if you opt for teddy or brushed cotton fabrics, you will also enjoy extra warmth in bed during these cold months.

5. Use multi-functional furniture in the living room.

There is a tendency to dictate that tables are for stuff while footstools are for resting, but there is a real risk that buying extra furniture will just result in clutter and trip hazards. Instead, why not transform your coffee table into a multi-functional piece by placing a large floor cushion atop it on which you can rest your feet while reclining in front of the TV.

Alternatively, consider using an ottoman in place of a coffee table and enjoy the benefits of hidden storage - perfect for keeping board games, books and toys out of sight but close at hand.

6. Choose ergonomic furniture.

One of the best ways to truly transform your home into a cosy space is by making sure that the furniture in it fits properly and allows family life to flow. All too often, we invest in oversized sofas and tables with the intention being to entertain, but actually large furniture takes up valuable floor space, limits walkways and makes a home feel cramped.

Instead, select furniture with rounded edges and clever features such as expanding leafs to allow you to customise the size of the furniture to your specific needs at any given time. Focus on creating space rather than trying to accommodate as many people as possible and your home will feel larger, less cluttered and more comfortable.

7. Opt for natural materials.

One of the best ways to make your home feel cosy is by opting for natural materials. Bringing the outdoors in is proven to increase your feel good pheromones so choose oak or pine furniture rather than MDF and consider a leather sofa rather than a fabric one. Not only are natural materials more environmentally sustainable, but they can also increase your sense of well-being, last longer and complement a wide variety of decor choices.
